The Vatican Appoints Fr. Stan Chu Ilo as Co-Director of a Global Missionary Initiative.

1. The Vatican Dicastery for Evangelization has appointed Rev. Fr. Stan Chu Ilo, priest of Awgu Diocese in Nigeria and currently Senior Research Professor of Theology and World Catholicism at DePaul University in Chicago, as CO-DIRECTOR of a new initiative of the Dicastery entitled THE CHURCH OF THE SHEAVES: EQUIPPING THE SAINTS FOR MISSION AS GIFT EXCHANGE.
2. In a letter dated May 6, 2026 and co-signed by the Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery, Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle, and the Secretary, Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu, Fr. Stan is expected to co-direct the project which has its roots in the missionary outreach of Pope Francis and its renewed emphasis in the pontificate of Pope Leo.
3. The aim of the initiative is “to strengthen the formation of missionaries who move between the Global South and the Global North. It also seeks to prepare pastoral agents in parishes and dioceses to foster inclusive and vibrant ecclesial communities, where all may feel at home, especially in contexts where rapid migration from rural areas to major cities is reshaping local cultures and increasing social diversity.”
4. Tangible fruits of the initiative will include the development of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for the training of missionaries and pastoral agents throughout the world church and “the possible repurposing of underutilized major seminary facilities in Europe, the United States, and Canada as centers of welcome, orientation, ongoing formation, and cultural immersion for priests, religious, and pastoral workers missioned to serve from the Global South.”
5. With this appointment, Fr. Stan will share his time between Rome, the coordinating center for the project, and Chicago where he continues to serve as a senior university research scholar.
6. The project brings together 106 prominent Catholic scholars from several countries of the world.
7. Fr. Stan is the coordinator of the Pan-African Catholic Theology and Pastoral Network (PACTPAN), the largest single continental body of Catholic scholars and pastoral agents. He is a notable contemporary African theologian and has published widely in the fields of theology, Catholic social ethics, African Christianity, ecclesiology, and mission studies.
8. In 2017, he won the Afro-Global Impact Award for his outstanding contributions to theological scholarship. He has studied in Nigeria, Italy, Canada, South Africa, and the UK.
Recall that his elder brother High Chief Vinmartin Obiora Ilo is the House of representative Candidate of the NDC for 2027 General Elections
