“May we have more brothers like you”Old Awgu people in Nsukka tell ESUT VC – Prof Okolie

The Vice Chancellor of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Prof Aloysius Michaels N. Okolie has been applauded by the members of Old Awgu Local Government Area Welfare Association (OALGAWA), Nsukka for his remarkable achievements within five months in office.

The Association which is made up of people from Aninri and Awgu LGAs who are resident in the Enugu North senatorial zone of Enugu state made this known when they visited the VC in his Enugu residence on Sunday, September 25, 2022.

Speaking at the well-attended event, the leader of the 30-man delegation and President of OALGAWA, Prof Augustine Ejike Chukwude, thanked the state governor and visitor to ESUT, His Excellency Rt Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Gburugburu) for the confidence he reposed in their son and the old Awgu LGA by appointing the round peg in a round hole to lead ESUT at this critical time. Prof Chukwude reminded the VC that even though he is in a challenging environment, he will make remarkable positive impacts to uplift the name of Awgu zone and the Enugu west senatorial zone of Enugu state. The President assured the VC that members of OALGAWA will support him in his determination to make ESUT better.

In his own remarks, Dr N. S. Oluah informed the VC that members of OALGAWA are pleased with his achievements so far and concluded that the Old Awgu wants to have more brothers like the VC. Members of the association including Prof Casmir Igbokwe, Dr Oyibo Eze and other prominent persons urged the VC to always remember the place where he comes from in all the things he will do because he will always go back to the place where he calls home.

In unison, members of OALGAWA prayed on the texts of Isaiah 41:10 for Prof A. M. N. Okolie and his family to be upheld in God’s right hand of righteousness.

Responding, the VC of ESUT, Prof Okolie revealed that his emergence as the VC was by the mercy of God. He further thanked the Governor who saw the need to do what is right in ESUT. He commended some individuals from Awgu LGA who supported him during the contest. The VC expressed his happiness for the support he is currently getting from his key opponents who have accepted to work with him.

He informed the people that since he came into office, appointments and promotions are being done based on merit in the state university. Some of his other achievements included payment of staff salaries up to date by seeking for funds to augment the wage bill, improvement of electricity supply to Agbani campus, activating students’ unionism, resolution of the graduation problems of the medical laboratory students, renovation of the VC’s main office, provision of bus for the transportation of staff from the city to Agbani at reduced cost, ensuring prompt and regular attendance to work by staff and regularization of exam time tables. The VC said that he plans to source for funds from the Tertiary Education Trust fund for the infrastructural development of ESUT and invest massively in Agriculture (e.g., oil palm plantation) to raise funds for ESUT. The VC who hails from Awgu town is an active and highly resourceful member of OALGAWA and attends their monthly meetings regularly before his relocation to Enugu to assume the office of the VC.

The VC’s lovely wife, Mrs Uche Okolie was also on ground to provide food and drinks for the guests.
