Although many are of the opinion that politics is a dirty game, at critical times certain things cannot be used in playing politics. The man Sen. Ike Ekweremadu without mincing words is one of Nigerian Politicians known globally with good character, capacity, integrity and as well very reserved. He have served this nation in the capacity of the Deputy President of the Senate for twelve (12) years without scandal or any form of words that can cause problem for Nigerians or the Nigerian Senate. He have made the PDP on whose platform he won several elections proud through his vibrancy in the Red Chamber, award of scholarships and Bursary to many students and have attracted so many projects to his constituency and across the country.
In Enugu State, one maybe right to say that Enugu have just one senator because only his name is heard across the 17 Local government areas of Enugu State when you mention road construction and rehabilitation, Water for all initiative that have provided boreholes to many communities in Enugu State, massive investment in educational sector within the state, several erosion control sites, Job Creation and empowerment and rural electrification etc. Consequent on his laudable achievements as a senator, many tend to blame him on federal and state government inefficiency in providing basic amenities, infrastructure and industries. To this category of people, Ikeoha should do all that, because what he have done, some state government who receives federal allocations have not done that. This is why they tend to forget that he is just a senator and was never an executive Governor or president who receive billions in allocations. He have neither allocation nor ever handled contracts.
When the PDP were abandoned by top politicians, Ikeoha vowed to be the last man standing for the PDP. This love for a party is one of it kind and should be rewarded. Although, giving him PDP ticket is not just because of his support, commitment and love for the PDP, Ikeoha have displayed high level of capacity and integrity more than any PDP member in Nigeria at present. He have distinguished himself globally and have earned the respect of all, even his rivals.
In the long list of those contesting for Governorship ticket of the PDP, non have a name compared to that of Sen. Ekweremadu. Although some have handled National positions, non of them except Sen. Ike Ekweremadu have a name outside their Local government areas talk more of their Senatorial zones. Some of them cannot point at anything they have done for their people while in various top government offices.
Because of the fear that Ikeoha should be given the PDP ticket unopposed, the propaganda of a non existing zoning agreement became an issue many months before his declaration to contest for the governorship because young men and women who have seen the decay in the state started pleading that Ikeoha should contest for the governor of Enugu State to rebuild the State. The slogan Ike is coming was initiated by the youths as a prophecy. Surprisingly, this slogan caused sleepless nights to this zoning agents who have never written or said what they have for the people of Enugu State. Sen. Ike Ekweremadu in his usual believe in capacity, had since presented his vision and mission to Enugu State people titled “A Partway to a New Enugu State”. A very simple and well articulated document of how Enugu State under his watch will be. Many analysts have read this Partway to a New Enugu State without any criticism because the contents are satisfactory and generally acceptable.
By his capacity and popularity, the PDP if they are serious in producing governors that can develop their states, should give Sen. Ekweremadu right of first refusal at all costs. Although there must be strong interest, the future of Enugu State should be paramount to the PDP. The PDP should also reward hardwork and commitment by a man who swore never to leave the party even if it means only him remaining in the PDP. As hard work in bringing development to many remote villages in Enugu State and beyond.
